Perspective is more than a technique: it places the viewer at one particular spot and turns the picture into a window rather than a symbol — a deep change in how the world was seen. The dome of Florence cathedral was built without scaffolding from the ground, by a method Brunelleschi kept secret. The financing came from banking, above all the Medici.
For children
In Florence and other Italian cities, artists began studying the works of antiquity and the human body afresh. Brunelleschi worked out how to draw perspective mathematically, so a picture looks like a room.
