"De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" was not immediately more accurate than Ptolemy's model, because Copernicus kept circular orbits. Kepler solved that with ellipses, Galileo supplied the observations, and Newton the physics explaining why. The truly radical part was not the astronomy but its implication: that humanity's place is not cosmically privileged, and that our senses can deceive us where mathematics does not. The Scientific Revolution is largely the story of learning to trust measurement over authority.

For 1,500 years people believed the Sun and stars went around the Earth. Copernicus calculated that it fits better if the Earth goes around the Sun. He dared not publish the book until he lay dying.
