The Huns and the migrations
Horsemen from the steppe set half of Europe in motion

The migrations are often called "barbarian invasions", but many of the groups sought entry as refugees and allies rather than conquerors — the Goths asked for asylum after the Huns advanced, and the revolt came when the Romans treated them abominably. Attila's empire was a coalition held together by one man, which is exactly why it dissolved immediately after him.

The Huns came west from the steppes, driving Germanic peoples before them into the Roman empire. Under Attila they threatened both Constantinople and Rome. When Attila died, their empire vanished as fast as it had come.
