Constantine also convened the Council of Nicaea in 325 to settle a theological dispute by vote — the first time an emperor defined what Christians should believe. That bound church and state together in a way that marked Europe for fifteen hundred years. He also moved the capital to Byzantium, renamed Constantinople, which outlasted the western empire by a thousand years.

The emperor Constantine ended the persecution of Christians and actively supported the church. By the end of the century Christianity was the state religion, and the old temples were closed. The change came astonishingly fast.
