The Rio climate convention is the parent body of every later climate summit, Kyoto and Paris included. The meeting also established the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" — that countries which have emitted most historically bear the greatest duty to cut. That principle is still the hardest knot in international climate negotiation.
