Pontiac's War
The French had kept their alliances alive with annual gifts of powder, arms and goods — a fixed part of diplomacy in the interior. The war forced the British Proclamation of 1763, barring settlement west of the Appalachians. It was meant to pacify and did so there, but it became one of the colonists' heaviest grievances and is named in the Declaration of Independence. The siege of Fort Pitt contains one of the earliest documented attempts at biological warfare: British officers discuss in their own letters having given away blankets from the smallpox hospital.
