The Natchez revolt
The Natchez lived on the Mississippi and were the last people still living as the Mississippian world had, with earthen mounds and a sacred ruler. The Natchez are our most important source for how a Mississippian society actually worked, because French observers described it operating: a ruler called the Great Sun, a strictly ranked order, and a marriage rule obliging the elite to marry downward. After the defeat the survivors were sold into slavery in Saint-Domingue or absorbed into the Chickasaw and Creek. The nation still exists, but the language has no native speakers left.
