Beringia
Beringia is the name for the land between Siberia and Alaska that stood dry for as long as the sea was low during the last ice age. "Land bridge" is a misleading word for a landmass the size of a continent that stood above water for tens of thousands of years. Genetic data support a Beringian standstill: the population that later became the Indigenous peoples of the Americas was isolated here for several thousand years before moving south, which explains why they are genetically distinct from north-east Asians. The area flooded again as the ice melted and now lies beneath the Bering Strait.
