In depth

For thousands of years textile work was the largest single call on human working time after food, and almost everywhere done by women. Spinning could be done while minding children or animals; weaving could not. When spinning and weaving were mechanised in the eighteenth century, it was therefore no accident that this began the industrial revolution.

For children

With a loom you could make cloth from flax and wool instead of using hides. Cloth can be dyed, sewn and made in any size. Textiles quickly became one of the most important goods in trade — and one of the most labour-intensive.
