Sep 13, 1683

The Ottomans' last thrust into central Europe

See it on the timeline

In depth

The battle is often presented as a clash of civilisations, but the alliances cut across: France had for decades cooperated with the Ottomans against the Habsburgs. The date has acquired a new and charged political use in modern European far-right rhetoric, worth knowing when one meets references to 1683.

For children

An Ottoman army besieged Vienna for two months before a Polish-German relief force drove them back. After this the Ottomans gradually withdrew southwards, and the Habsburgs took Hungary.
