The battle is often presented as a clash of civilisations, but the alliances cut across: France had for decades cooperated with the Ottomans against the Habsburgs. An Ottoman army besieged Vienna for two months before a Polish-German relief force drove them back. After this the Ottomans gradually withdrew southwards, and the Habsburgs took Hungary.
