The Qing was a conquest dynasty ruling through several identities at once: Confucian emperor to the Chinese, khan to the Mongols, protector of Buddhism to the Tibetans. The population tripled to over four hundred million, largely thanks to maize and sweet potato from the Americas, which could be grown on hillsides.

The Manchus from the north-east conquered China and ruled for two hundred and fifty years. They doubled the empire's area by taking Xinjiang, Tibet and Mongolia — the borders China claims today largely derive from them.
