That it was possible was long disputed in Western scholarship, which assumed drift and accident. In 1976 the canoe Hokule'a sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti without instruments, navigated by Mau Piailug of Micronesia, and settled the question in practice. The voyages were planned colonisation: the canoes carried pigs, dogs, chickens and a dozen useful plants.

Polynesian voyagers found Hawaii after sailing four thousand kilometres of open ocean without instruments. They navigated by stars, swells, clouds and the flight of birds. It is one of the most impressive feats of navigation in history.
