The Narmer palette is both artwork and political programme: the king striking his enemy, in a pictorial formula Egyptian art repeated almost unchanged for three millennia. Egypt's distinction was stability — shielded by desert on both sides and served by one river as road and field alike, the state could outlast collapses that would have ended other realms.
For children
A ruler named Narmer joined the two halves of Egypt. On a stone palette we see him wearing both crowns — the white of the south and the red of the north. The realm he made lasted three thousand years.
