The Code Napoléon still applies in altered form across much of Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. The Egyptian campaign brought scholars who found the Rosetta Stone and founded Egyptology. The continental blockade against British trade had a Norwegian consequence too: the years of famine, and ultimately 1814.

Napoleon conquered most of Europe and everywhere imposed a new legal code with equality before the law and freedom of religion. He lost in the end, but the laws remained — and the nationalism he awoke in his enemies shaped the rest of the century.
