The Exodus

The archaeological evidence suggests the Israelites emerged chiefly *within* Canaan rather than arriving from outside. But that makes the story no less potent: the idea of a people freed from oppression and entering a covenant has since been invoked by medieval peasants, by enslaved people in the Americas and by the civil rights movement. Few narratives have had a greater political afterlife.
