The Mongols were religiously tolerant for reasons of state and recruited administrators from across the empire: Persian astronomers in China, Chinese engineers in Iran. Gunpowder, printing and the compass reached the West in this period. The price was enormous: some cities were destroyed so thoroughly that their populations did not recover for centuries.
