Mehrgarh shows South Asia did not merely receive farming from outside: zebu cattle and probably cotton were domesticated here. The village was occupied for over four thousand years and developed gradually towards the building traditions and crafts that later appear in the Indus valley. That makes it the best bridge we have between the first farmers and South Asia's first cities.

At the foot of the mountains in today's Pakistan lay a village where people grew barley and kept zebu cattle. In the teeth of the dead, archaeologists found small precise holes drilled with flint bits — the oldest known dental work in the world.
