The analysis was written in the reading room of the British Museum, financed by his friend Engels's factory income. Whatever one thinks of the conclusions, it permanently shaped social science: the idea that economic structures shape culture and politics is now widespread far beyond Marxism. In the twentieth century, regimes invoking him ruled over a third of humanity.

Marx tried to explain how capitalism works and why it produces both enormous wealth and enormous inequality. His ideas later became the basis of revolutions and states across much of the world.
