The International Space Station

Oct 1998

The rivals of the space race build something together

See it on the timeline

In depth

The station is the largest structure humans have assembled off Earth, put together from modules launched over more than a decade. It is also a political instrument: the cooperation kept Russian rocket engineers employed after the Soviet collapse, when the alternative might have been that expertise dispersing elsewhere.

For children

Russia and the United States, who had competed over space throughout the Cold War, began building a space station together with Europe, Japan and Canada. Since 2000 it has been continuously inhabited.
