Joan of Arc, a seventeen-year-old peasant girl, turned the war at Orléans and was burned as a heretic two years later — then canonised in 1920. The war also ended French as England's court language: from 1362 English was used in the law courts. The knightly aristocracy lost its military monopoly for good.
For children
England and France fought over the French throne for more than a century. The longbow made peasants dangerous to knights, and cannon made castles obsolete. Out of the war came two countries beginning to think of themselves as nations.
