The settlement's device was to make the question of identity less absolute: residents may hold British, Irish or both citizenships, and the border became effectively invisible. It is widely studied as a model for peace settlements in deeply divided societies — and Britain's departure from the EU tested precisely that invisible border twenty years later.

After thirty years of conflict in which over three thousand people were killed, the parties in Northern Ireland agreed a power-sharing settlement. It was approved by referendum on both sides of the border.
