During the war, movements appeared with demands centuries ahead of their time: the Levellers called for universal male suffrage and equality before the law. The monarchy was restored in 1660, but power had shifted for good, and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 fixed parliamentary supremacy.
For children
Parliament went to war with the king over who should decide, won, and executed Charles I in 1649. That a king could be tried by his subjects was unheard of in Europe and shook every court on the continent.
