The Qutb Minar, the world's tallest brick minaret, was raised from the materials of demolished temples — a building still politically contested in India. The period also produced Urdu, which grew from the meeting of Persian and local languages, and Sufism became a bridge between the religions where the theologians would not bend.

Turkic and Afghan rulers founded a sultanate at Delhi that lasted three centuries. They were among the few to repel the Mongols. Persian became the language of the court, and Indian and Islamic culture began to merge.
