Deep Blue beats Kasparov
A machine wins at the game that was humanity's proof
See it on the timeline →In depth
Deep Blue did not win by thinking like a player but by calculating two hundred million positions a second. That is the point: the machine solved the task in an entirely different way, and it immediately moved the goalposts for what "really" requires intelligence. The same pattern has repeated with Go, with image recognition and with language.
For children
Chess was long taken as proof that humans think in a way machines cannot. In 1997 the world champion Garry Kasparov lost a match to the computer Deep Blue.
