Militarily they ended in defeat, but their consequences ran another way: Italian cities such as Venice and Genoa built trading empires on the transport, and Europeans met a material culture far beyond their own. The Fourth Crusade never reached Jerusalem — it sacked Christian Constantinople in 1204 and weakened Byzantium beyond repair.
For children
The pope called on European knights to take Jerusalem. They did in 1099 and lost it again. The wars lasted two centuries, cost enormously, and left a bitterness still invoked politically.
