The strategy was taken directly from Gandhi and worked out in detail: activists were trained to absorb violence without answering it. Television was decisive — it made violence in Alabama something the whole country saw the same evening. The laws fell in 1964 and 1965, but economic inequality and housing segregation remained, and the argument over that continues.
For children
Black Americans fought laws that kept them segregated and without the vote. They used boycotts, sit-ins and marches — deliberately without violence. Television images of police violence against peaceful demonstrators changed public opinion.
