The Carolingian renaissance saved classical literature: nearly every Roman work we have survives in copies from this period. The script they developed, Carolingian minuscule, with lower-case letters and spaces between words, is the ancestor of the typeface you are reading. The coronation also created a lasting quarrel over who conferred power on whom — pope or emperor.

On Christmas Day 800 the pope crowned Charlemagne emperor in Rome. His realm covered most of western Europe. He could not write himself, but gathered scholars at court and had almost every Latin text we possess copied out.
